We thought of world travel as something distant, from a more financially secure future.
Any middle income family living in Brooklyn, NY has to maintain a strict budget just to break even.
Although we had each traveled extensively within our native countries throughout the United States and South America, paying for an international vacation seemed out of reach. The travel agencies we contacted offered very little advice or input, simply quoting prices that seemed inflexible, arbitrary and often times inflated. We had hoped that expert advice would include customization and flexibility to work within our budget and provide tips and information about the locations we wanted to visit.
The only way to consider an international vacation was to plan ahead, WAY ahead, do the research ourselves and and hope to make up the expenditure over time.
Once we made the jump and committed to the primary investment, we started looking into secondary expenses, like lodging and activities. This allowed us to stagger the financial burden and more importantly, see the vacation from the perspective of a long term investment - planning the trip around our budget. Through extensive research, we were able to find cost cutting opportunities along the way and fund a comprehensive, luxurious vacation at a great price. Best of all, we traveled at a fast pace and saw as much as possible without any glitches. It was a lot of work, and organization but we exceeded expectations, and we were hooked.
From there, we continued to build vacations as we could afford them, using the same method and improving upon it. We fell in love with researching the history and highlights of our destinations and taking advantage of the best each vacation had to offer. Just as importantly we learned how organize our adventures to run smoothly.
Friends and family started asking how we did it, where we got the money, if we ever stayed home and eventually, if we could help them fulfill their vacation dreams as well.
We helped out when we could and even started to get paid for our services. When we had to start to turning people down, we began to wonder if it was possible to turn our love of travel into a full time business. Our satisfied clients had us believing we were experts, but when we started training to become agents, we found out we had a lot to learn. It was a big wake up call and took time and a lot of hard work, but once we acquired affiliation we realized that there were real industry advantages we had been missing out on.
We also realized that our time in the trenches gave us insights that we've used to boost the system...
